Donation of $2000 from Bougainville Besties to our partners Callan Services in 2020

 

Callan Services elected to put the funds towards building a bush materials Guest House at their centre on Buka Island, which is separated by a narrow strait from the main island of Bougainville.

The guest house will enable people who come to their centre seeking help from central and southern Bougainville to stay overnight after treatment.

​

The road along the east coast of southern Bougainville was extremely rough, with fording rivers etc. In 2022 the road was upgraded  but it still remains unsealed. Public "buses’ are predominantly troop carriers that, while able to navigate the rough terrain, leave many passengers  sick for much of the journey. 

 

It still remains difficult for people coming from the central mountains, isolated west coast and atolls to reach Buka.
